To collocate means to set or place together. In English, the term collocation is frequently used in the context of Grammar and Vocabulary. Collocation is made up of two or more words that are commonly used in English. They are combinations of meaningful words which systematically occur together.

 

TYPES OF COLLOCATION

adjective+noun

heavy snow, strong smell, poor man, rich culture, small box, big fight,  kind lady, white paper, deep valley, blue sky, hard rock etc.

adverb+adjective

completely different, fully aware, seriously ill, really good, highly risky, utterly stupid, really happy, badly damaged etc.

noun+noun

computer accessory, mobile data, memory card, disk brake, dream car, tour plan, time table, world trade, city police etc.   

noun+verb

sky diving, dog barking, lion's roar, snow fall, man-made, car cleaning, elephant's move, bird watching etc.

verb+noun

giving permission, writing essay, follow the rules, sending mail, taking care, shut the mouth, finishing lunch, cooking rice etc.

verb+adverb

suited perfectly, drive slowly, speak fluently, ran confidently, rub gently, completed successfully etc.

adverb+verb

nicely driven, perfectly maintained, simply writing, humbly requesting, confidently speaking, seriously treated etc.
